Pizza, Padrinos, and Puppies!

On the malecon with my Yudelkis, Daniela, and Erika!
Here we are again almost at the end of the month…time flies! The last week has been busy as usual and lots of fun!

As far as my house goes, my birthday present to my girls is always a trip to San Pedro complete with pica pollo (fried chicken) or pizza. So I took my October birthdays (Erika and Daniela) into town this past Friday along with Yudelkis (a good behavior reward). It was a lot of fun! We started out by getting some food (two of the girls actually picked pizza over pica pollo much to my surprise) and then we did a little shopping and most exciting of all, we went on some motos. Yudelkis and Daniela are pretty familiar with how things work in the city, but for Erika it was a learning experience…it was her first time on a moto! At first, she was scared and wasn’t even sure how to get on. But by her second ride, she was really enjoying it! We also made spaghetti as a house last weekend as a reward for good behavior!

Anita was in charge of making the spaghetti!
Katerin helped out too!
As far as work in the office goes, we have been working SUPER hard on getting all of the Christmas cards out to the different countries and we are now just about ready to send them off. We are also preparing for a big benefit/gala that will be taking place in the capital this coming Tuesday. We are hoping to get lots of local sponsors this way! It’s a pretty big undertaking and it’s giving me and Avriel lots of flashbacks to the big international meeting that took place here this past February as we’re preparing brochures, videos, donations forms, and other materials. We’re really hoping for a good turnout and fun night! Part of the program includes our dance group doing a baile, which is always a lot of fun! We also just had a visit from the International Women’s Club in Santo Domingo. As a group, they sponsor ten kids here and some individuals sponsors kids besides that. It was a morning of getting to know NPH for them and visiting with their godchildren…a good time was had by all!
Estrellita and Darlyn with their madrina!
These are three of our newest arrivals along with the lady who brought them here!

In other news, we found some puppies!! This past weekend, we were walking along the road to the nearby batey when all of a sudden we heard some loud whines and whimpers coming from the ditch. Much to our surprise, out hop four tiny puppies. Sadly, it’s an NPH rule that no dogs are allowed inside here :( The next day, we went back looking for them with bread and water (after another volunteer saw them on an early morning run) only to find out that they were gone. Soon after returning from this failed attempt at locating them, we hear that one of the older boys found a puppy. And sure enough, it was one of our puppies! He hid it here at NPH for a night, but a secret like that (esp. one that is so loud and smelly) is hard to keep when you live with 200+ people. So since Monday, this puppy (which has since been given the name Estrella) has been living in a box right outside the front gate. The kids (and me and Avriel) check on it every couple hours and give it lots to eat and drink (although if you ask me, hot chocolate and rice might not be the best choices for a puppy, but whatever). And today, Luis found ANOTHER puppy when he was leaving school in San Pedro. So now we’re up to two!
The makeshift shelter right outside the front gate...I kid you not, a new piece of furniture is added daily.
The puppies! Nala is the brown and white one and Estrella is the tiny black one!
So as usual lots has been happening here. This Sunday marks Visitor Day once again and it will be my fourth Visitor Day here (they happen every 3 months). These are always days that I have to mentally prepare for as they are VERY difficult for a lot of the kids (and consequently, for us volunteers as well). And then November is upon us and I get to go home on vacations. 21 days and counting!! Also, I’ve starting applying to grad school…I’m so torn between being 110% immersed in what I’m doing here while also attempting to think of the future and eventually leaving my time as a volunteer at NPH (NOT a pleasant thought, but a reality nonetheless!) ¡Hasta la próxima!

October is Flying By!

Wilson as a comedian!
Once again, we’ve been keeping super busy here. Here’s a few highlights from the last couple of weeks…

1. Proyecto Familiar with Carolina and Junior. Hands down, some of the best kids here at NPH. We made yaniqueques, fried flour tortillas essentially. They were yummy!
Siblings...mixing the dough!
Junior was the expert...he taught both Carolina and I.
LOTS of yaniqueque!
There's the crew!
2. Goodbye Tia Santa! Tia Santa officially left NPH, so we did a little goodbye party her last night here complete with manzanas and miel (apples and honey). We are excited to have our new tia, Magalis, in the house!

Me and Tia Santa!
The house and Tia Santa there in the middle!
3. Profession pics! Av and I have been busy taking photos of the kids dressed up as what they want to be in the future. These will be to advertise sponsorship in the office and visitor houses here.

Hermanos: Alex, Amauri, and Alejandro as engineers and baseball players.
Catia and Massiel as princesses!
Some of our newest kids: Chantal and Anderson as a singer and police officer.
Leonela as a model!
Katery as a midwife/mom!
Miguelina as a police officer!
Our other newest addition: Katerin as a painter!
4. Birthdays! Lucel, one of the oldest boys here, turned 19! And on October 10, there were two birthdays in my house: Erika turned 13 and Daniela turned 15! We tried something new this time and I let the girls decorate their cake (thanks Madelon for the frosting and sprinkles!)
Lucel at his bday party with two of his siblings: Kenna and Ernito.
Me and Lucel!
My birthday girls, Erika and Daniela (notice the cake!)
5. Santa Ana goes to the beach! As my house has been improving quite a bit in regards to behavior lately, we got a sweet reward: a trip to the beach. We spent the entire day traipsing through the waves and chasing after cangrejos. Plus I got super burnt! OW!
Josi always loves it when I take pictures of her...not ;)
Valentina....SO photogenic.
Lucy!
Erika!
Me and Maria del Carmen!
Daniela with her hair loose!
6. And lastly, all of NPH has been working SUPER hard on the Christmas cards for all of the sponsors. We have over 1500 sponsors for our 214 kids which means over 1500 cards are being made. It’s been a big project and the kids and volunteers have been great about it!

Other than that, the only other big thing on my mind is the fact that I am going home for vacations in 29 days…I CAN NOT WAIT!!! It will have been almost 11 months out of the country…and then I will return here until next July. Hard to believe that when I come back, there will only be 6 months left! :(
There's Josi! (She was in a rare I'll-let-you-photograph-me-today mood!)
Zuleika and Belkis!

Life in the Fast Lane

All of the volunteers at supper in Santo Domingo!
Wow, I don’t even know where to begin. Life has been busy busy busy as of late (like always I suppose)…but this time it’s more or less the normal, regular stuff that is making it feel like 24-hour days aren’t long enough. To recap the last two weeks (opps…I missed a week of blogging…I blame it on our VERY unreliable Internet…)

1. I learned to drive a moto! Rather, I STARTED learning. Here in the DR, there’s no problem finding a Dominican boy that’s willing to teach you. What WAS a problem was getting up the guts to actually do it, esp. when I was told to fly solo after about ten minutes of learning.
Just driving through the sugar cane fields...no big deal...

I'm flying solo (and still upright...)

2. September birthday party. On Sunday, we had the birthday party for the kids with birthdays in September in Casa San Pascual. There was a lot of showcasing of dembow skills and of course, bizcocho!

Katherin (our newest kid) turned 8 and Carlitos turned 16!
Junior turned 14!
3. Volunteers eat dinner in Santo Domingo. One of the board members donated a supper to all of the volunteers at their 5-star restaurant in the capital (Pat-e-Palo). It was a pretty out-of-the-ordinary night for us. The food was DELISH!
We had a fun guagua ride over!
All sitting down at the biggest table I've seen in my life...
Crazy eye face....notice how I CAN'T do it...
4. Keeping busy with visitor groups! Recently, we’ve had a couple visitor groups that I’ve helped out with including a couple padrinos (sponsors). One group left behind a donation of some European cheese which we distributed to all the younger kids!

Arleeny and her Italian godparent...
Johan and his cheese :)
Junior, Sandy, and Junior with their cheese (before Sandy realizes he doesn't like cheese, hehe...
Casa Santo Domingo and their queso!
The twins, Jose and Josecito...they look just a LITTLE bit alike, right?
5. Projects in Santa Ana. This week we redid our chore chart in the house which was a big job and we redid the photos on our Little Mermaid mural, since the old photos were getting a little outdated. My favorite part was that all the girls participated in some way or another. It was like unplanned team bonding.
New chore chart!
Updated mural!
6. Tia deportes. Madelon, Avriel, and I have been leading Zumba/aerobics classes with the tias twice a week for a month now. It’s a great way to bond with the tias and work up a sweat (not that that’s hard at all!)

7. My family is visiting again in January!!! Suzanne, Michelle, and Becca will be here for a full two weeks and my parents and best friend Abby will be here for a week! CAN’T WAIT!

8. Parasites gone! And finally, FINALLY after a good 5-month battle, I think I am parasite-free. No more worms and amoebas inside me, gracias a Dios!
