Foot-Washing at the Old Folks Home!

So being as it’s Semana Santa (Holy Week) and the kids have no classes, we’ve planned all sorts of outreach activities in the surrounding bateys (sugar cane settlements) to take the kids to throughout the week, one being today’s foot-washing ceremony at a nearby nursing home. This was the outing I helped to plan, so I was really hoping it would go well. It went WONDERFULLY! We started off with a prayer and song, then did the foot-washing (and nail-painting and hair-washing) and then served supper (arroz con leche). Our kids started the afternoon off complaining about how they picked the wrong outing and wondering if we brought gloves, but before long they were telling me stories about their new friends (all in their 90’s or older of course) and how they wanted to come back to visit. I was so proud of our kids!
